Ferrari unveiled its Vision Gran Turismo concept last weekend during the 2022 World Finals organized in Monaco around the famous video game. The Italian manufacturer has played the same game as others for several years, by designing this virtual car which will be available next month for players. If it will not materialize in reality, it offers a glimpse of future technologies or ideas that might germinate in Maranello in the years to come.
The concept of the Prancing Horse is notably equipped with a sunroof allowing the pilot to settle down in a lying position as in a single-seater. There are also characteristics already used on Ferrari models, but pushed to the extreme and sometimes from Formula 1. There is thus an S-duct at the front, air outlets at the level of the wheel arches and a flat carbon fiber bottom.
“The Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo embodies a new language [de conception] that we will highlight for years to come. We will want to touch it”promises Flavio Manzoni, design director at Ferrari, in an interview with Traxion.GG, a parent publication of Motorsport.com. “It was a very long design process that started with several 3D models. But in the end, we converge on a final solution that we believe represents exactly what we wanted. The representation of the new futuristic design , it’s the poetry of Ferrari.”
The rear of the concept is derived from the Hypercar 499P presented a few weeks ago, in particular at the level of the spoiler and the diffuser. Ferrari has developed its Vision Gran Turismo with ventilated wheel arches and a newly patented aerodynamic technique with two side channels that route airflow around the cockpit and over the sidepods.
The Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo concept.
On the engine side, it is the same 3-litre bi-turbo block as that of the 296 GTB/HTS, also used in competition on the brand’s future GT3. Not having to comply with any technical regulations, the designers had full latitude to exploit the quintessence of this V6 at 120°. It thus produces 1030 horsepower at a speed of 9000 rpm. This block is connected to an eight-speed gearbox directly borrowed from Formula 1 and the internal combustion engine is accompanied by three electric motors (one at the rear, two at the front). The hybrid part alone develops a power of 326 horsepower.
And yet, despite this a priori complex power unit, the weight of the Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo remains barely higher than that of a Mazda MX-5! Its empty weight is 1250 kg, distributed 43.5% on the front and 56.5% on the rear.
The figures put forward by Ferrari promise a 0 to 100 km/h in less than two seconds and a 0 to 200 km/h under five seconds. This concept can reach a maximum speed of 350 km/h and the hypothetical time on the Fiorano test circuit is evaluated under 70 seconds. A life-size – but not rolling – model will be exhibited at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.
