For Hirofumi Yamada, all faces look the same. He suffers from prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness. Millions of people in Germany are affected by cognitive dysfunction – but some of them don’t even know it. The clinical picture also poses challenges for specialists.

Hirofumi Yamada well remembers looking for his parents at the carnival when he was a child. “It was easier for me to identify my parents because they are Asian,” he says. They just stood out among the many white people at the fair. But without this landmark feature, Yamada would probably not have recognized his parents.
