When EMI was at a standstill and Shahrukh’s Gypsy was seized; Juhi said at the time

Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Yuhi Chawla have been friends for decades. Juhi is one of Shah Rukh’s closest friends. The two worked together in many films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss, Dar, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, etc. Currently, Shah Rukh and Yuhi are teammates in the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Juhi is a good friend of Shah Rukh who he met early in his career. At a recent Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry event, Juhi shared her memories of her friendship with Shah Rukh.

At the event, Juhi talked about Shah Rukh’s early life. Shah Rukh was a young man who came to Mumbai from Delhi with many dreams and did not even have a place to live in Mumbai.

“I don’t know where Shah Rukh lived at that time. No one cooked for him. He drank tea and ate with the unit members. He was friendly and chatted with everyone. Shah Rukh worked two or three shifts at the same time. While Raju and I were doing Gaya Gentleman, he was also doing Deewana and Dil Aashna Hai with Divya Bharti.”

Today, Shah Rukh is the richest actor in India. Shah Rukh’s net worth is around Rs 6,300 crore, topping the IMDB list. But Juhi remembers that the beginning of Shah Rukh’s career was not smooth. Shah Rukh often faced severe financial problems and struggled to pay his EMIs. Juhi also narrated the story of Shah Rukh Khan losing his black gypsy after he defaulted on his loan.

“Shah Rukh had a Black Gypsy. But one day, the bank seized it, apparently because he couldn’t pay EMI. He was left with nothing. He came to the sets very disappointed. ‘Don’t worry, you will get more cars.’ That day, I told him, reassuring him that Shah Rukh still remembers it, look at him today,” says Yushi.

Shah Rukh came from humble beginnings but just as Yuhi had predicted, his career took off. Although Shah Rukh is now popular as the King Khan of Bollywood, he still maintains his friendship with Yuhi.

Juhi also recalled what Vivek Vaswani said about Shah Rukh before his first film, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Juhi came to the film after working with Aamir Khan in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Prior to this, Juhi had never met Shah Rukh.

“Your hero is very handsome and famous, like Aamir Khan,” producer Vivek gushed to Yushi about Shah Rukh. Yushi envisioned a chocolate-faced, handsome hero like Aamir.

But Juhi says she was disappointed when she met Shah Rukh in person. “When I arrived on the set, I saw Shah Rukh for the first time. A skinny, brown-skinned young man in a white shirt. I asked the producer, ‘In which angle does he look like Aamir Khan? You got me.”

However, Juhi added that she did the film with Shah Rukh despite having the wrong preconceptions. “See, I made him a star too,” Juhi added with a smile.

Juhi also said that working with Shah Rukh was a great experience. “Shah Rukh would rehearse and improvise before filming. He was never selfish and would give me good advice. It was a great experience.”
