Guatemala national team goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen is living his first adventure in American soccerspecifically in the Columbus Crew, current champion of Major League Soccer (MLS).
At 27 years old, the goalkeeper is more than established, his role as the undisputed starter in goal for the National Team under the technical direction of Luis Fernando Tena supports him and he has also stood out in the different clubs he has played for.
However, his status in the national team is not reflected in his club.
Since joining the Columbus Crew in early 2024, the Guatemalan has barely seen action in a match, when he had to come on in place of Evan Bush in a duel once morest Real Salt Lake in April.
Hagen has been a regular in Columbus’ squad, but has remained on the bench since The starting position is maintained by Patrick Schulte, a young 23-year-old American goalkeeper.
However, the near future might be in Hagen’s favor, as Schulte has been called up by the United States National Team that will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics and will miss at least three of Columbus’s games, which opens up the possibility for the Guatemalan to make his debut as a starter with the American champion.
According to Columbus, Schulte will leave for Paris following the match once morest LAFC on Saturday, July 13, so Nicholas Hagen might make his debut as a starter in goal in their next match, which will be once morest Charlotte FC on Wednesday, July 17 (5:30 p.m.).
It is worth noting that Hagen will not remain the team’s sole goalkeeper while Schulte is unavailable, as Evan Bush, who at 38 years old has played two games this season, is also on the team.
