The Argentine National Team showed a better version against Iraq, and achieved its first victory in the Olympic Games. A 3-1 victory that is key to its chances of advancing to the next stage of the men’s soccer tournament in Paris 2024, and that allows it to depend on itself.
Javier Mascherano’s team won with goals from Thiago Almada, Luciano Gondou and Equi Fernández, to add their first three points in the group and, with Ukraine’s victory over Morocco, they moved into first place on goal difference, with all four teams equal on points.
The final fate of the group will be decided next Tuesday, July 30, when the Albiceleste face Ukraine in Lyon, the same venue of this Saturday’s match. Argentina will depend on itself to advance to the next stage.
What has to happen?
With a win, Argentina will qualify for the quarter-finals, regardless of what happens in the match between Morocco and Iraq. Furthermore, Ukraine’s victory over Morocco will ensure that Mascherano’s men qualify for the quarter-finals even if they draw against the European team.
However, the Albiceleste knows that it cannot lose to Ukraine under any circumstances, since if it does, it will be eliminated from the Olympic Games regardless of the result of the other match.
