Wheelchair-Friendly Traffic Lights Unveiled in London: A Step Towards Greater Accessibility

Similar to the pair of traffic lights in Vienna some time ago, London has now introduced wheelchair users as traffic light symbols. One variant is with an electric wheelchair.

Stand on red, roll on green: London transport companies have equipped pedestrian traffic lights with symbols for wheelchair users instead of pedestrians in several places in the British capital. The green lights come in two versions: a female person in an electric wheelchair and a male person in a conventional wheelchair.

The traffic lights were installed near five different subway stations with disabled access, including at the Tower of London, as the transport company Transport for London announced on Friday. The occasion is the International Day of People with Disabilities this Sunday.

Three-time Olympic champion, Pete Reed, in a wheelchair since 2019

The idea comes from three-time Olympic rowing champion Pete Reed, who has been confined to a wheelchair since suffering a spinal cord infarction. “One day in 2019 everything changed for me. My life as a full-time wheelchair user brings with it a whole range of requirements that can be dramatically eased by better access and traffic for wheelchair users (…),” the transport company quoted him as saying.
