The messenger WhatsApp wants to give you more freedom when dealing with notifications. In the beta version 2.24.11.13 of WhatsApp for Android phones, a new option was discovered in the settings. Here you can now specify whether the number of unread messages is reset as soon as you open the app or not.

Until now, you had to explicitly tap a message to mark it as “Read”. Only then was the number of unread messages reduced. However, the option only applies to the number of notifications that are displayed next to the WhatsApp icon on the home screen, reports the fan blog WABetaInfowhich discovered the new features. In the app itself, the messages are still shown as unread.

Unread messages can be reset when opening the app

By default, the number of unread notifications next to the app icon will be reset to “0” when you open the app – regardless of whether you have actually read the messages or not. Alternatively, you can also specify that the number always includes all unread messages in Messenger, as it does now.

It remains to be seen when the new option will be included in the regular app. As mentioned at the beginning, it is currently only available to selected users of the WhatsApp Android beta.
