From January 1, 2023, the online messaging application will no longer be available on 49 phone models, which are incompatible with certain operating systems used on Apple and Android.

The New Year may be gloomy for some WhatsApp users. The online messaging application will no longer be available from January 1, 2023 on 49 phone models, which have obsolete operating systems, reports the regional news site Midi Libre.

Smartphones with versions lower than Ios.12 for Apple and Android 4.1 will no longer be able to host WhatsApp.

As a result, some models made popular in the early 2010s, such as the iPhone 5 and 5C and the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3, are likely to lose access to this application. A choice which is explained by the need to “stay in the race for the latest technological advances”, explains the mobile application.

A network used by more than a third of the world’s population

For the owners of these phones, WhatsApp will however continue to function, provided that they have a device on which an update of the operating system is possible. This manipulation is done in the settings.

With nearly two billion assets, a figure announced at the start of 2020 by the application, WhatsApp is one of the most popular applications, behind Facebook (2.5 billion users), its parent company. Intuitive and free, the platform allows you to send instant written or voice messages to one or more people.
