After dropping Whatsapp support on the first generation iPhone SE, it’s now the turn of two new iPhone models to suffer the same sentence. If you have them, expect to have problems.
Whatsapp is over for iPhone 5 and 5C
The Wabetainfo site reports this information via a screenshot: the iPhone 5 and 5C are the next models to lose WhatsApp compatibility. If you have these iPhones, you have time to take the hit, because end of support is expected to go live on October 24, 2022.
The iPhone 5 was released in 2012 and featured the Apple A6 chip. The following year, the iPhone 5C was released alongside the iPhone 5S, and came with the same processor as the 5 but with a plastic material in order to offer a lower price. Not low enough apparently because this model did not meet with much success.
The iPhone 5S meanwhile is launched for the first time with TouchID and the A7 processor with a 64 bit architecture, which brings a significant power gain compared to 32 bit.
Old iPhones that are becoming truly obsolete
We still have the right to be disappointed. Apple makes it a point to keep iPhones updated for as long as possible to ensure users can enjoy the latest features for many years to come. They are far ahead of the competition in terms of longevity of updates.
But for those who want to keep their Apple smartphone even longer and don’t care regarding having a device with the latest version of iOS, they can do it, and the iPhone still works fine for quite a while. But ! If apps like Whatsapp stop working, it puts off many people from keeping their smartphone.
Whatsapp justifies its choice by explaining that there are models which are used too little and which have components that do not support security updates.
