WhatsApp tests blocking specific chats with biometrics

Since the beginning of 2019, it is possible to protect access to WhatsApp with a security feature that requires user authentication via Touch ID/Face ID; this option, however, covers the application as a whole, not specific chats.

This might change soon, as the messenger is testing an option to block access to specific chats — which can also be accessed through biometric authentication, as disclosed by the WABetaInfo.

Users of the beta version of WhatsApp can check if the feature is already available in the settings of specific chats – from the “Block Conversation” option. Once locked, the chat will move to a new section called “Blocked Conversations” and you will need to use Face ID or Touch ID to open it.

In addition, as an additional layer of privacy, notifications of blocked conversations will be received without identifying the author or displaying the message content. Also, media will not be automatically saved to the device by default to keep locked conversations even more private.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature will roll out to even more beta users in the coming weeks. There is, of course, still no release date for the stable version of the messenger.
