WhatsApp set to introduce third-party chat support

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is coming into effect in Europe from March 2024 and keeping this in mind, WhatsApp is preparing to make other messaging networks a part of its app.

Dick Brower, director of engineering at WhatsApp, has confirmed that the company is ready to provide portability to its more than 2 billion users.

During an interview he said that it is easy to provide third party app support but at the same time maintaining the privacy, security and autonomy of WhatsApp is a difficult challenge, but we are satisfied with our work.

It should be noted that under the Digital Markets Act, major technology companies such as Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet have been given a deadline of March 2024 to implement the new rules.

Under this new act, messaging services will have to ensure the feature of cross-platform messaging.

Along with WhatsApp, Metta is also working on introducing cross-platform messaging feature in Facebook Messenger.

Initially, cross-platform messaging in Meta’s apps will be limited to one-on-one chats and a new option called third-party chats will be introduced in Inbox.

Dick Brower said that the choice of third-party chat support feature will be at the discretion of the user.

He added that the user will be able to enable this feature at will, this option is necessary to protect users from spam and fraud.

Companies that will connect their services to Meta’s system will have to sign an agreement, the details of which have not yet been released.

WhatsApp will require end-to-end encryption to enable portability.

It is not yet clear whether other messaging apps such as Telegram, Signal or others are planning to add cross-platform messaging support for WhatsApp.

But providing this support will make it possible for users to chat with people from other apps without leaving WhatsApp.

For example, if you are using the Signal app, you will be able to send a message to a WhatsApp user without even needing a WhatsApp account.

Similarly, one can chat with a friend using Telegram or Signal while in WhatsApp and there is no need for accounts of these apps.
