Written by Samah Labib Thursday, September 07, 2023 05:00 PM Mark Zuckerberg announced a few weeks ago that WhatsApp was in the process of rolling out high-resolution photo sharing, and HD video would soon follow, and as of today the process is complete and Meta confirmed to The Verge that the photos are high-resolution And HD videos are available to everyone. “Both the high-resolution images and the high-resolution videos have been released globally,” WhatsApp spokesperson Ellie Hetrick told The Verge in an emailed statement. The company also posted a promotional video for Threads earlier in the day encouraging users to “share epic moments” with the new feature, which has been available to beta testers for the past few months. After selecting a photo or video to send from your Camera Roll, you should see an “HD” button at the top of the screen (to the left of the crop tool). Once you select this, a menu will appear asking you to select “Standard Quality” or “HD Quality”. If you don’t see this button yet, beware – I had to reopen the App Store several times before the option to update finally appeared. Previously, WhatsApp users might only send images in highly compressed quality, which gave the app a huge disadvantage compared to competing services like iMessage. The high-resolution photos and videos come amid a number of other important updates that appear to make WhatsApp more competitive in business, and Meta recently released a native version of the app for macOS, which supports video calls for up to eight participants and voice calls for up to 32 participants. Screen sharing is newly available to the platform, as are unnamed group chats.
