WhatsApp now lets you keep temporary messages

O WhatsApp today announced a feature that has been in testing for some time: the ability to save temporary messages to conversation. That is, even following the time defined for them to disappear, the specific messages chosen to be saved will be kept in the chat, if the option to do so is selected.

The mechanics of the feature are quite simple: just hold the desired message — in a conversation whose messages were defined as temporary, of course — and select the “Save” option. Thus, the chats that are saved will continue to be available in the conversation even following the defined expiry date.

The sender of the message, however, has the final say on saving the messages. When any of them is saved, whoever sent it receives a notification, being able to decide whether or not to allow the maintenance of the chat. If you don’t want the message to be saved, it will be deleted when the set time expires and, of course, it can no longer be saved.

Saved messages are marked as Favorites and are stored in the “Saved Messages” folder, organized by conversation. The feature works both in groups and in individual chats; The amount of time a person has to prevent a message from being saved was not clear, but likely includes the expiration period set in the temporary messages feature.

WhatsApp said that the feature will be rolled out globally “in the coming weeks”, meaning if it still doesn’t show up there, just wait a little bit.
