WhatsApp Launches Voicemail Transcript Feature for Easy Message Access

Jakarta

WhatsApp just released a voicemail transcript feature. As the name suggests, this feature will display voice messages in text form so that users do not need to listen to the entire contents of the voice message.

WhatsApp says this feature will be useful when users are traveling or in noisy places where they would have difficulty hearing voice messages.

This new feature is starting to be rolled out gradually for WhatsApp users on Android and iOS in certain languages, and will be available to users worldwide in the next few weeks. Voice message transcripts can only be seen by the recipient of the message, so the sender cannot see the transcript.

To start using this new WhatsApp feature, voice message transcripts must be activated manually via settings. Here’s the guide:

How to activate the voicemail transcript feature

  • Open the WhatsApp application and select the Settings menu
  • Tap the Chat option
  • Enable the ‘Voicemail transcript’ toggle
  • When enabling Voicemail transcript select the transcript language to use.

How to view voicemail transcripts

  • Activate the voice message transcript feature first
  • Tap and hold the received voice message, then tap the ‘Transcribe’ option
  • The text of the transcribed voice message will appear below the voice message
  • Tap the down arrow in a voicemail to reveal more transcriptions.

It should be noted that WhatsApp will download the selected language to ensure the transcription process is carried out on the device. WhatsApp ensures that all transcribed voice messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption and cannot be accessed by anyone, including WhatsApp.

Voice message transcript results may not be available due to several factors such as the language setting for the transcript does not match the language in the voice message, some words are not recognized perhaps because they are too noisy, or the voice message language is not supported.

Currently the WhatsApp voice message transcript feature only supports a limited number of languages, however WhatsApp promises to add support for more languages. On Android devices, WhatsApp’s voice transcript feature supports English, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

On iPhones running iOS 16 and above the language options available are Arabic, Chinese, English, Italian, Japanese, German, Korean, Portuguese, French, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Meanwhile iOS 17 and above supports Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Swedish and Thai.

The What’s-What of WhatsApp: Transcribing Voicemails Like a Pro

Jakarta – Gather round, folks! WhatsApp has rolled out a shiny new feature that’s sending shockwaves through the messaging world: the voicemail transcript feature! That’s right, so now when Auntie Edna sends you a voice message that sounds suspiciously like a cat in a blender, you can read it instead! No more fear of accidentally listening to her unsolicited opinions on the state of the world while you’re trying to discreetly buy socks in a store.

WhatsApp claims that this feature is particularly useful when you’re in bustling places or, let’s be honest, when you’re just too lazy to hit play. Perfect for when you’re trying to sneakily check your messages while pretending to be involved in an important conversation. And hey, if you’re traveling or in a noisy café that sounds like the set of a third-rate action movie, your ears will thank you!

This new capability is gradually making its way to users on Android and iOS in various languages. Just remember, the voice message transcribing is a secret between you and WhatsApp – the sender won’t have a clue what’s been scribbled down. Imagine the intrigue! “Did they not understand my poem about existential dread?”

How to Activate the Voicemail Transcript Feature

So, you want to get in on the action? Here’s how to activate it:

  • Open the WhatsApp application and go to Settings.
  • Tap on Chats, the colorful tab that might suggest you’re actually social.
  • Enable the ‘Voicemail transcript’ toggle, because who wouldn’t want to turn their messages into text?
  • Select your preferred transcript language. Choose wisely; it’s like picking your starter Pokémon!

How to View Voicemail Transcripts

Once you’ve activated that bad boy, here’s what you’ll need to do to actually see those magical transcripts:

  • Make sure the voice message transcript feature is turned on (trust me, double-check).
  • Tap and hold the received voice message — your finger should get a workout!
  • Hit the ‘Transcribe’ option and watch as technology works its wonders!
  • Tap the down arrow if the message is longer than your attention span for more transcriptions.

Now, here’s an important note: WhatsApp guarantees that all transcribed messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption. This means your juicy gossip stays between you and your device—very cloak-and-dagger! Though, they did say that the transcripts might end up looking like that one friend trying to text while driving — misunderstandings galore! Factors like language mismatches, noise, and tech hiccups might just lead to hilarious results.

At the moment, the voice message transcript feature is having a bit of a language identity crisis! It currently supports a limited number of tongues, but WhatsApp promises to expand that list faster than you can say “multilingual.”

On Android, you’re looking at English, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Meanwhile, if you’re strutting along with an iPhone and iOS 16 or above, you’ll have more choices than a kid in a candy store: Arabic, Chinese, English, Italian, Japanese, German, Korean, Portuguese, French, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish! Upgrade to iOS 17, and throw in Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Swedish, and Thai. Essentially, if you can say it, you might just be able to read it!

If you’ve ever received a voice note that left you more confused than a cat in a crispy bag, this feature is like finding a treasure map in a junkyard — suddenly, every message becomes worth deciphering! So, dear readers, are you ready to transcribe your way into the future? Tap away, and may your voicemails forever be legible!
