WhatsApp launches page with security and privacy tips

O WhatsApp aired today a new page with the aim of helping people to take the necessary precautions inside and outside their application, to protect themselves from scams and possible account invasions. Call of Security Centerit also provides tips on how to use the messenger’s various security features, such as two-step verification.

This page can be accessed from both a mobile device and a desktop and also explains how various “behind the scenes” features work, such as end-to-end encryption and automatic spam detection, for example. In addition, it is possible to learn how to recover your account in case of loss of smartphone.

The Security Center also advises WhatsApp users to only install their official apps, as third-party modified versions may contain serious security flaws and pose a serious risk when it comes to privacy.

The team behind the app explained the motivation for creating this page in a press release:

We created this page to bring together the resources that users can access, as well as information about the technology we use to deliver a simple, reliable, private and secure service.

In addition to teaching how to block and report users and messages, the page discloses some recently implemented features that seek to give more control to users. Since March, for example, group admins can manually approve new participants through a backlog, making sure only the people they want are participating in the conversation.

More recently, WhatsApp has started testing a new username system that, by all indications, will eliminate the need to share your phone number for someone to add you to their contacts. If implemented, this feature should further increase privacy on the platform, since a smaller number of user data would be exposed on the internet.
