It appears to be a simple update, a cosmetic change. But in reality, this is the start of a profound change for WhatsApp. The most popular messaging application on the planet, with more than two billion users, is beginning a radical transformation with the appearance of “channels”. Called “channels” in English, these are news feeds to which WhatsApp users can subscribe. A service allowing two people to communicate with each other, the application takes a giant step towards social networks, thus approaching an X (formerly Twitter) or Telegram.

As is often the case, the new product was tested on a small scale before being launched globally. From June, users in ten countries, such as Colombia and Singapore, were able to experiment with the “channels”, before this innovation was made available to everyone this week. To access it, you must open the application, then go to the “news” tab at the bottom left, and the channel suggestions should appear under the “statuses”. If these suggestions do not appear yet, simply register from the WhatsApp website.
