But voicemails also have some major disadvantages – firstly, it is not always convenient to play these messages, secondly, some voicemails can be really long, full of hesitant pauses and parasitic words, so listening to them can easily turn into real suffering. It is for these cases that WhatsApp came up with an interesting and useful new feature – it will allow voice messages to be automatically transcribed into text. According to Meta, which owns WhatsApp, all transcriptions are processed directly on the device after the audio message is downloaded.

“When you want to connect with friends and loved ones in a more personal way, send them a voice message. Nothing can replace the feeling when the voice of a person you can’t be close to comes out of the loudspeaker. But it may happen that you are on the road, in a noisy place, or you just don’t have time to stop and listen to a long voice message.” the company said in a blog post. It’s worth noting that only a limited number of languages are currently supported. Audio transcriptions in WhatsApp are only available in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. However, Meta states that the feature will be available to people worldwide and should be available to all users in the coming weeks. It is not yet known when (and if at all) we will see support for the Czech language.
