The instant messaging application WhatsApp announced on Thursday the launch of “WhatsApp Channels”, a new feature inspired by its rival Telegram.
“We are pleased to introduce you to WhatsApp Channels, an easy, reliable and private way to receive important news from people and organizations on our platform,” the Meta subsidiary announced on the dedicated blog post. .
These channels will be a way for personalities, official organizations, sports teams or NGOs to broadcast their messages and publish content, such as text, photos, videos, stickers or to offer surveys to their audience.
Also, they will make it possible to join threads of interest on particular themes (weather, cooking, road traffic, thought of the day, etc.).
Users will be able to find channels in a new tab called “News”, separate from chats with their contacts and groups.
On the security and privacy side, phone numbers, profile pictures and channel choices of followers will be private and published content will disappear following 30 days.
“WhatsApp Channels will aim to be the most secure public messaging feature available and continue to deliver the level of privacy that app users expect,” Meta said.
WhatsApp will now test this new feature in Singapore and Colombia, before it is rolled out to other countries.
