In recent months, WhatsApp seems to be focusing its work on two very specific angles: the community aspect and confidentiality. For the first, messaging last year rolled out the aptly named Communities tab, which lets you create subgroups within existing groups. Adding to this the conversations that can accommodate ever more users, WhatsApp is no longer this application intended for interactions between two people.

This does not mean that it has forgotten its main advantage over the competition – mainstream, at least. Indeed, WhatsApp has been putting a lot of emphasis on protecting privacy for the past few months, in particular by looking for other ways for users to identify themselves than their phone number. The possibility of replacing the latter with a nickname is particularly considered. Even, in the Communities tab, to make it completely disappear.

You will soon be able to hide your phone number in the Communities tab of WhatsApp

Currently, your number is visible to all members of a Community whenever you interact with a message posted in the conversation. Since the last beta of WhatsApp, it is possible to prevent this. By setting their number to private, you can react to any message while keeping your contact information secret.

The administrators of the Community, on the other hand, will not be able to camouflage their number, only the participants will be able to remain completely anonymous. Also, if you attempt to directly contact another group member whose number is private, they will need to give you permission to access it.

The feature is currently only available via the latest WhatsApp beta, on both Android and iOS. The latter is gradually being rolled out to users, and should therefore soon find its way to the general public version of the application.
