Meta has finally started preparing a WhatsApp app for iPad. After several years depending on the web version, the messaging platform will finally have a native version for Apple tablets, as announced on Monday (18).

Now available to users enrolled in the TestFlight beta program, the application is built with Mac Catalyst, suggesting that it is an adapted clone of the macOS version, especially when looking at the screenshot released by WABetaInfo, which shows an interface similar to found in the Mac application. Check out:

To set up WhatsApp on the iPad, you need to use TestFlight to install the beta version of the application on the iPhone and iPad. Once this is done, simply open WhatsApp on the iPhone, go to Settings, tap “Connected devices”, and then “Connect a device” to scan the QR code using the tablet.

The iPad will sync all messages and files shared through WhatsApp — this process may take a few minutes and require a good internet connection to happen more quickly. After that, it will be possible to use the application on the tablet independently, without requiring the cell phone to be connected to the internet.

With this new feature, all the messages and files you send or receive will synchronize across all your devices quickly and without depending on the operating system — be it a device with Android, iOS, Windows or macOS.

There is still no expected stable release date for WhatsApp on the iPad, but it might be a few months before the platform is ready to reach all users. For now, the app is only available to eligible TestFlight registrants. Parallel to this, Meta tests changes to the iOS app interface.
