WhatsApp is constantly exploring new features to improve user experience. One recent area of experimentation has been to display avatars for participants in group chats, especially when no profile picture has been uploaded. The Meta-owned messaging platform is testing different approaches in this ongoing experiment, with the goal of finding the best way to represent participants without profile pictures. WhatsApp group conversations did not display profile pictures, instead participants’ names or phone numbers appeared above their messages, however WhatsApp started testing including profile pictures in group chats in August 2022, despite initial testing, the feature was later discontinued. According to WABetaInfo, a reliable WhatsApp beta feature tracker, a recent change in group chats includes displaying the participant’s initial name on a colored background if they don’t have a profile picture. This change was specifically introduced in beta 2.23.15.9 of the Android app. Previously, participants without profile pictures were represented by a silhouette of a person with a colored background. The silhouette has been replaced with the participant’s initial, making it easier to identify individuals in a group chat. Improved identification and user experience This subtle change brings many benefits to WhatsApp group conversations, by displaying the participant’s first letter on a colored background, chat members can easily identify each other without relying solely on the color associated with their profile picture, it adds a personal touch to the group chat And it makes it more attractive to the participants. Challenges and future considerations While this change is a step in the right direction, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed, for example, it remains to be seen how WhatsApp will handle profile photos if the account name starts with a special character. Ensuring consistency and accuracy in displaying avatars, especially when dealing with unique usernames, will be critical to a smooth user experience. Meta’s Efforts to Improve Usability Apart from the avatar viewing experience, Meta introduced another usability-enhancing feature, users can gradually detach WhatsApp from their smartphone apps and primarily use it on a computer through the WhatsApp Web platform. This new feature allows users to link WhatsApp Web to their phone number, which was previously only possible through the smartphone app to create a WhatsApp account.
