O WhatsApp today denied a rumor that it was exploring the possibility of including adverts in your app to increase your revenue. Originally published by Financial Timesthis information also talked regarding a supposed subscription to remove advertisements from the messenger.
According to sources heard by the vehicle, these ads would be displayed in statuses, on users’ chat screens and even among the messages themselves, which would certainly be quite invasive.
The rumor was categorically denied by Will Cathcart, WhatsApp boss, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) just a few hours following its publication. Cathcart also took advantage of the situation to correct the name of Brian Acton (one of the creators of the messenger), which had been spelled wrong in the original article.
This story of @FT is false. We are not doing that. Also, it looks like you misspelled Brian’s name…
It is worth noting that a spokesperson for the messenger had already denied this possibility in the original article. Financial Times, although he did not confirm whether she had been tested in the past or not. Apparently, however, the chance of seeing something like this on WhatsApp in the near future is practically zero, fortunately.
This week, WhatsApp began releasing the Channels feature worldwide, which already has spaces managed by influencers and famous companies. The feature works very similarly to Telegram channels and Instagram broadcast channels.
