After testing the resource implementation, the WhatsApp announced today the voice chats for large groups. The new feature consists of an alternative to group calls, allowing voice/audio communication, but without the need to initiate a call, notifying group members.
To use the new function, simply tap an icon with sound waves in the upper right corner of the group messaging screen. Then, a bubble will be sent – as a kind of message – in the group, allowing participants in the group in question to tap it to enter the voice chat.
The mechanics of WhatsApp voice chats are similar to how the application works Discord, as a “voice room” is created within a group that members can join by tapping the button. The main difference is, as mentioned, the fact that an actual call is not made, disturbing everyone in the group with a notification to answer the call. O Telegram also has a similar feature.
While the user is in a voice chat, call controls are displayed at the top of the conversation, making it possible to activate/deactivate the sound, hang up or even send messages without leaving the conversation or, of course, the chat. The feature, like the app’s messages and calls, has end-to-end encryption.
Voice chats are rolling out worldwide initially to groups with 33 or more participants. In the future, the app should expand the function to other groups, with a smaller number of participants, although there has been no comment on this so far.
