WhatsApp announces security flaws in its mobile app

The Directorate General for Information Systems Security warns users of the WhatsApp mobile application of a risk of account hacking, due to two major flaws in the system. Installing new updates is a must to fix the problem.

WhatsApp has released an update to fix two remote code execution vulnerabilities affecting its mobile app. The affected versions are WhatsApp for iOS and Android version earlier than 2.22.16.12, and WhatsApp Business for iOS and Android version earlier than v2.22.16.12.

The first flaw affects the “WhatsApp Video Call Handler” component, allowing an attacker to exploit the vulnerability during a video call of a targeted user, and take full control of your WhatsApp application. While the second flaw affects the “WhatsApp Video File Handler” component, allowing an attacker to exploit the vulnerability by sending a specially crafted video file to a targeted user, and convincing the user to play it.

Thus, in order to better secure your WhatsApp account against possible threats, measures can be taken, among others: Activate two-step verification to secure your WhatsApp account, print the fingerprint or activate facial recognition, avoid save information in the cloud, avoid downloading files and media without verification and without protection, disable automatic downloading of media (photos and videos) in the phone, control who can add you to groups, or even messages and content disappearing from WhatsApp.
