what’s wrong with the iconic “Girls”

The film, beloved by millions, had to look completely different.

The lyrical comedy “Girls” was presented to the Soviet audience in the early 60s. The painting by Yuri Chulyukin was warmly received by the public and is still considered a classic of cinema. However, the play by Boris Bedny, on the basis of which the script was written, turned out to be not so popular among fans.

At the same time, many discrepancies with the original text can be seen in the picture. And most of all they affect the characters’ characters, which are far from being so unambiguous on the pages of the play.

For example, Tosya, played by Nadezhda Rumyantseva, is not actually a certified chef. She enters the kitchen by accident and is characterized by simplicity and ignorance. And the story of Anfisa in the book is much more tragic. Her romance with the engineer Vadim Dementiev leads nowhere. The heroine knows that her lover dreams of children. But she cannot give him the happiness of fatherhood, because due to an early abortion she will no longer be able to become a mother, so she leaves him. The story of Nadia, played by Inna Makarova in the film, is no less tragic. The girl suffers from a large number of complexes that are associated with her appearance. And her only goal is to get married as soon as possible.

Chulyukin decided to abandon such complex characters. He almost completely remade the characters, giving the Soviet audience a light comedy about life at the Ural timber industry.
