“What’s the point of working so hard?”

With rising living costs and new laws, buying a home is a difficult task for many young couples. Jana and Vincent, 24, from Leopoldsburg, paid the price, as revealed by Het Nieuwsblad. While he thought he had all the conditions to buy a house, accumulating four jobs, in addition to a contribution to the real estate project, the couple was refused by the bank.

He has a job as a house painter in a company and he also works on his own. She is employed full time and has also started working on her own in a side hustle. “We’ve always been taught that you have to work hard to get what you want,” explains Jana to our Flemish colleagues.

The cost of this house was 295,000 euros and since work was to be expected, Jana and Vincent asked for a loan of 300,000 euros. “We did not yet have the 10% personal contribution. But we could still save, even if it becomes more and more difficult because of the rising costs. »

“A big blow”

The couple said they were outraged by the bank’s response, which asked them if the parents could not intervene. “What’s the point of working so hard?” asks Jana. “I said no and that I didn’t want them to. We took a hit. Do all young people receive a sum of money from their parents? It was a big blow for us. »
