What’s New Apple Won’t Reveal at WWDC

If you were expecting one of the products below, you will have to be patient…

Every year for almost 20 years, Apple has organized its traditional developer conference, WWDC, as summer approaches. Several days started with a conference and during which the invited developers have the opportunity to get their hands on the different operating systems made in Apple with which they will have to work for the next twelve months.

But the WWDC is also an opportunity for Apple to lift the veil on some highly anticipated and sometimes even unexpected new products. And like every year, with the approach of the keynote, rumors are rife concerning the products possibly announced by the Tim Cook band. So, to prevent you from having false hopes regarding one or the other announcement, let’s take a direct look at what Apple will not be presenting on June 6th.

Apple Car

To say it is expected is an understatement. For months, if not years, the Apple Car has been talked regarding for good and bad. Mainly in bad shape, with many employees who are part of the development team of the project giving up along the way, the latest being no more and no less than the team manager.

But then, since the time we talk regarding this project, when is it likely to be presented by Apple? In all likelihood, it’s not for now. The rumors concerning the project contradict each other one following the other, some evoking a 100% autonomous and electric car, others pointing to much evolved software than CarPlay to be integrated with current manufacturers.

Finally, the latest rumors speak more of an electric car, certainly, but not entirely autonomous. It would include some elements drawn from artificial intelligence, but would remain within European legal limits. A 100% autonomous car is not abandoned by Apple, however.

As you will have understood, no rumor currently seems reliable enough to know what the Apple Car will look like and it is still far too early to foresee a release window. Barring a huge turnaround, we shouldn’t hear regarding the Apple Car this year, let alone at WWDC.

Apple Glass

This is the other big project that Apple teams are currently working on. A mixed reality device, skilfully combining virtual and augmented reality. For years, Apple has shown a growing interest in augmented reality, with iPhones and iPads compatible with applications using it. LiDAR cameras, calculating depth of field, are another glaring example.

But the idea that Apple is working on a device of this type does not come out of nowhere either. Dozens, if not hundreds of patents have been filed by Apple in this direction. Multiple technologies are being explored by the Cupertino engineers, one of the latest would concern a automatic lens cleaning mechanism.

But what you need to know is that Apple is actually working on several mixed reality devices. A helmet, glasses, and even lenses. The helmet might indeed be unveiled this year, and why not at WWDC. It would then not be called Apple Glass, a name that would be reserved for augmented reality glasses, expected in 2025.

iPhone 14, Apple Watch Series 8, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2

These are the general products to which Apple reserves a well-defined schedule. The iPhone always comes out at the start of the school year, and therefore will not have the luxury of being unveiled at WWDC, which is also so soon following the previous model.

Same for the Apple Watch, which should for its part land in the fall, like every year. Finally, the AirPods 4 are not expected to release in 2022, so soon following the third generation. On the other hand, the AirPods Pro 2 will not, a priori, be presented at WWDC, but would be well planned for 2022.

New MacBook Pros

Here too, the latest MacBook Pros date from October 2021. Very successful 14″ and 16″ models, which have only just arrived. It thus seems far too early for Apple to renew its range at WWDC. However, that doesn’t mean that Apple doesn’t plan to unveil new Macs on June 6.

Indeed, rumors point to a new completely revised MacBook Air as well as a new Mac Pro, highly anticipated since the teasing of the last keynote.

But what products are still expected this year? Here they are !
