What will Mitsotakis and Samaras say? 2024-02-17 22:46:00

In the government, they estimate that the goal of maintaining the number of 120 declared is feasible, as they calculate “no” and abstentions around 40-45 (if we consider that when this discussion started it was 70), but it will be different how it will be things if the “no’s” are more than the abstentions. It is no coincidence that Akis Skertsos also yesterday appealed to the blue MPs to vote in favor of the bill.

However, the tendency of the dissidents, with the exception of the specific group of parliamentarians who move around Antonis Samaras, with the most typical case of all that of former minister Thanos Pleuris, is to head towards abstention on the grounds that they do not want to create a problem for the government.

However, in Maximos anyway, they consider today as the end of a journey that has troubled the government and the party for months, as the issue dragged on for a long time and created multiple problems. The assessment that exists is that whatever damage has been done has been done and from now on they must turn the page to the next day in which they must pass critical bills that interest the vast majority of citizens. However, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to defend the bill and have a unique debate not only with the leaders of the opposition parties, but also with former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Codifying the positions of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, we would highlight the following regarding equality in civil marriage:

  • The equality of all citizens is sought. The protection of children of same-sex parents who already exist is sought.
  • This reform was discussed soberly in Greek society and within the parties.
  • In this dialogue all points of view were heard and I respect all points of view.
  • The bill does not change the current framework of surrogacy. Excludes “parent 1” and “parent 2” terminology.
  • The new setting adds rights to some, not removes rights to many.
  • An issue of equality does not lend itself to division.
  • The positions of the Church are heard.
  • This government has provided many practical solutions to the needs of the Clergy.
  • Past disagreements did not harm State-Church relations.

For his part, Antonis Samaras is expected to repeat his positions and denounce anew that – in his opinion – the ND. it leans too much towards the Center and succumbs to “entitlement”.

Mr. Samaras is anyway of the opinion that the N.D. must make a new turn towards a (extreme) neo-Right, arguing that this trend is observed across Europe (and the USA with the possible return of Trump), while the “traditional” Center Right is shrinking.

With a wider “colorful” majority, civil marriage between same-sex couples is expected to become the law of the state as of tonight.

The passing of the bill will take place by roll-call vote on the “line” requested by Archbishop Ieronymos and which the 21 MPs of Niki and the Spartans (in order to reach the minimum of 15 signatures set by the KtB) hastened to adopt initially with a partnership and to follow SYRIZA, with Sokratis Famellos “justifying” this attitude with the phrase “no one can hide” and Stefanos Kasselakis having imposed party discipline on the MPs to vote for it.

The bill, if it will be voted on principle by ND, SYRIZA, PASOK, New Left and Pleussi Eleftherias, it is absolutely certain that it will be voted with a wide majority, which will however be far from the 243 positive votes that count in total in parliamentary strength these parties, as they all have small or large pockets of dissenters. The large majority, however, of those who disagree with the party’s position is estimated since yesterday with certainty that they will choose to express themselves through “abstention” from the vote and not a direct no-vote, in an effort to avoid creating major intra-party rifts.

In this regard, yesterday’s position in the Plenary of the member of the ND is typical. Thanou Pleuris, who clarified that “the bill is not unconstitutional but I personally disagree […] I will not vote for it, but my attitude will be such that I will not give the right to anyone who wants to take advantage of it in a small way.” According to parliamentary circles, it is estimated that the positive “blue” votes on the bill will be around 110.
