Having supplied equipment to the Olympic Games since 1976, the Lyon-based Gerflor group equipped 10 competition sites during this 2024 Paris edition. Once this deadline has passed, the world leader in floor coverings has announced that all of the floors supplied will be reused.

What young volleyball player wouldn’t dream of playing a match on a floor trodden by Earvin Ngapeth or Antoine Brizard? What young basketball player wouldn’t be enthusiastic about playing on the same floor as Nando de Colo? These projections will soon become reality, since Gerflor, supplier of these surfaces for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, has announced that they will all be reused. A world leader in the field of floor coverings, the Lyon group equipped 40 courts for 8 disciplines this summer, for a total of 33,000m² of floors.

In addition to the indoor basketball and volleyball courts, Gerflor has also supplied the handball courts, as well as those for several Paralympic Games competitions (also indoors). All these courts will now be made available to many schools and sports facilities, which will allow future users to practice their sport on surfaces that have hosted the world’s greatest athletes, in addition to extending the life of the equipment.

A lasting legacy for tomorrow’s champions

In addition to reusing 100% of the floors supplied, Gerflor has also innovated by designing them using 35% recycled and fully recyclable materials. Two commitments made before the competition, in a desire to reduce the group’s environmental footprint and promote the circularity of materials. “The issue of legacy and sustainability has been at the heart of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and it is also a priority for Gerflor”specifies the Lyon giant.

An approach welcomed by Caroline Louis, Circular Economy Manager at Paris 2024: “Offering younger generations the opportunity to tread on surfaces that have seen the world’s greatest athletes pass through, while respecting our sustainability objectives, is a strong symbol. Each reused surface proves to us that it is now possible to combine performance and ecological transition in the world of sport.”
