This Wednesday, February 8, the members of the UN Security Council are meeting in the context of the war in Ukraine. On the menu for discussion: the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, while the recent deliveries of American arms to Ukraine have further revived tensions.
Among the speakers present this Wednesday, Russia will notably be able to count on Roger Waters, co-founder of the group Pink Floyd. Last September, the British musician showed his support for Moscow, urging the West to stop its arms deliveries to kyiv and asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to put an end to this “deadly war”.
On Tuesday evening, Dmitry Polianksiy, Russia’s official representative to the UN, confirmed the invitation to Roger Waters: “We have invited the famous British musician and rocker as a speaker,” he wrote on Twitter.
An announcement that has aroused many reactions within the international community. “Russian diplomacy used to be serious. What will be the next step? Mr. Bean?”, a Security Council diplomat, on condition of anonymity, told the Archyde.com news agency.
The UN Security Council, made up of 15 members, has already met dozens of times since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24. However, no binding measures might be taken, because Russia has a right of veto, as do the United States, China, Great Britain and France.
