As far as film music is concerned, 2022 was by no means a great year for Bollywood.
The trademark action style of South Indian cinema has been reduced to a mere imitation in Bollywood, and the film music has suffered perhaps the most.
Stop for a moment and think that there is a song of 2022 that just settled in your heart? Have you not only added it to your playlist, but listen to it several times a day?
Perhaps the biggest problem of Bollywood is finding a good story. The lack of content was already noticeable at the end of the last decade, which the Corona shutdowns have made even worse. From here, the formula of South Indian-style action films came into the hands of Bollywood.
Although this made some action films successful at the box office, the South’s shadow over Bollywood deepened. With the buzz of action films, the space for romantic stories and small-scale medium-budget films has shrunk, and as a result, there is no room for the story to create beautiful music.
One role of music in the Bollywood tradition was film marketing. Now the protagonists are doing it in modern ways of TV shows and mass media. Moreover, when movie songs are available on YouTube etc., why would anyone go to the cinema just to listen to them. Film music was no longer the first need, so songs for the business mind-set were automatically dropped from the list of top priorities.
The current dire state of film music can be gauged from the fact that there is probably not a single film this year that has three or four beautiful songs that make the entire album a part of its playlist.
The best album in a very bad year for film music is AR Rahman’s Hero Panthi Two. Although this is below the standard that Rahman has already set and expectations are now set accordingly. But no other composer including Pritam has a single film this year where most of the songs are not terribly bad.
In a year of horrendously bad songs, we present our pick of the ten best. You can call them less scary songs if you want.
1. Miss surprised
This song from ‘Hero Panthi Two’ is AR Rahman’s masterpiece this year. As soon as the song starts, you immediately realize that this music can only be given by Rahman Sir. Be it instrumental or rhythmic patterns, new surprises are encountered.
The lyrics of this song were written by Mehboob. Although Mahboob has written beautiful songs for Rahman’s earlier films, he looked a bit more traditional in Hero Panthi 2. However, Rahman Sir’s lyrics and instruments are so beautiful that the thoughts are less and less towards the Shabdas.
2. Rejected
Hero Panthi is an action film and obviously action film music demands Granger rather than melodiousness. ‘Dafkar’ is a beautiful example of this which is a masterpiece of Rahman’s music as well as his very unique singing.
As mentioned above Hero Panthi 2 is probably the only film of 2022, which has more or less all the songs beautiful. After Miss Hiran, we were most impressed by ‘Dafkar’.
3. Jehra is a drug
This song was first performed by Amar Jalal and Farid Kot Group in 2019, which attracted attention with its Punjabi-tinged lyrics and sharp language.
Since it became part of Bollywood this year, we have included it in our list. ‘An Action Hero’ itself was not very successful but this song was played a lot.
It kept the lyrics and most of the instruments as in the original, the minor changes required were done by Tanishk Bagchi. Amar Jalal, IP Singh, Yohani and Harjot Kaur were the singers who created the magic of sound.
4. Caesarea
Advertising of a film before its release is a known trend, but Kesaria started a trend. There was so much hype before the song that hardly any of the songs were seen and heard before.
Kesaria is a simple song but not so simple that it is not beautiful to the ears.
Composer Pritam and Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya present this song with their favorite singer Arijit Singh this time. The movie was Brahmastar which had Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.
5. Hear my drumming
A song from the 2007 film Bhol Bhalyan, ‘Ami Jai To Maar’, was sung by Shreya Ghoshal in a melodious voice. Its lyrics were penned by Sameer and this song is undoubtedly one of Sameer’s best songs.
This year, Bhol Bhaliyaan 2 was released and given the public’s love, it was not at all surprising that this song was made part of the film again.
Pritam made a very minor change in the music. Shreya Ghoshal has sung it again but Arjit Singh also added to the sweetness of this song with his voice. Although it is a beautiful song, the 2007 version tugs at the heartstrings more.
Lal Singh Chadha’s story had perhaps the greatest scope for music among the films released today, but despite that, its music could not be as exceptional as the film itself.
In the music of Pritam, the song of Lal Singh Chadha that we liked best is Kahani Suno. It was sung by Arjit Singh and Shilpa Rao while lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
It is a beautiful song with a slow tempo.
7۔ Fatoor
It is a beautiful addition to the songs sung by Arijit Singh and Neeti Mohan. Ranbir Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor are seen romancing on screen and you get lost in the melodious atmosphere of the song.
This song featuring Shamsheera is composed by Mithun while the lyrics are penned by Karan Malhotra. This is a beautiful love song that can keep you devoted forever.

Music duo Sachin Jigar’s beautiful tunes have been sung by Arjit Singh while the lyrics have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Although the name of this film is ‘Bheediya’, but listening to this song, you can guess that there is a bit of romance in the horror film.
The highlight of the song is Arjit’s dreamy voice in relatively slow music. It will be a great choice to learn how Urjit’s voice creates different waves in the music of different musicians.
9۔ Everywhere
Ayushmann Khurrana is not having such a good time though. He hasn’t been able to give big musical hits like in the past but that doesn’t mean he has forgotten about romance on screen.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Har Pai Tu’ from Dr. G is one of the most beautiful songs of this year. The lyrics composed by Sultan Soleimani are composed by Kumar. This song is beautifully sung by Raj Burman.
10۔ my soul
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Gangubai Kathiyawari hit the theaters in February this year. Although the music of the film was expected to be very high due to the theme of prostitution, it did not turn out to be the case.
My soul is relatively precious. One of its special qualities is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has not grafted any sentimentality, but it not only moves the story forward but also beautifully captures an emotional state of it. Its lyrics are penned by Kumar.
