What training will there be at the 43rd SEMI Congress?

José María Fernández, president of the Scientific Committee of the 43rd National Congress of SEMI.

Update on the two main axes that currently govern assistance in Internal Medicine: the patients chronic and emerging diseases. This is one of the objectives pursued by the 43rd National Congress of Internal Medicine of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), which will take place between November 23 and 25 at the Gijón Conference Center and Trade Fair (Asturias). ), and where more than 2,100 internists will have more than 130 training activities.

“He’s going to show up lots of news in all fields that we cover in Internal Medicine, from chronic pathologies such as diabetes or heart failure to more emerging pathologies such as minority autoimmune diseases. Also issues that link thes latest technologies with health, such as the use of big data. This is a space to which more and more time must be devoted and it will allow us to advance in all aspects”, details José María Fernández, president of the Asturian Society of Internal Medicine (SAMIN) and president of the Scientific Committee of the 43rd Congress.

The internist, who has been preparing the event for several months, encourages specialists to come to a Congress Located in an “incomparable setting” and with a scientific level of “great diversity”. “It will serve for those who like the specialty globally, since you can go to a table of infectious, autoimmune or heart failure. And for those professionals who have a special interest in subspecialties they will also be able to meet their expectations”, explains María Fernández.

Care that goes beyond chronic patients

One of Interna’s “battlefields” is attention to chronic patientsa theme that will have a special dedication in the Congress, but that It is not the only one where Internal “generates great work.” “Caring for chronic patients is a challenge that is getting bigger and bigger. We are a country with an aging population and one of the greatest longevities. Here we have to act as a backbone specialty. have to do health plans with the councils and Primary because each time this attention requires more time and is more complex. In addition, due to the way that Internship is developed in Spain, the internist has a great role. This attention has to be developed around us at the hospital level and with a direct relationship with Primary”, details Fernández.

An example of this relevance is that right now Internal accumulates 20 percent of registrations of these patients, which represents close to 700,000 patients per year. “The next specialty is Cardiology, which gives just over 5 percent. This shows that we are continuously caring for this elderly and fragile multi-pathological patient. But we do not only work there, we also have a lot to say in emerging and autoimmune pathologies, which often occur in young patients”, claims the specialist.

In this sense, Fernández considers that these are currently the two “main axes” of the specialty “Just like we had a fundamental role in the covid, Intern in all these emerging pathologies with hardly any evidence, she always takes the helm to manage these patients. We not only do comorbidities in chronic patients, we are directing and coordinating these care from the hospital”, highlights the president of the Scientific Committee.

An update of the “key” Internist in the quality of care

For Fernández it is “key” that the internist is updated and the 43rd National Congress of SEMI offers a great opportunity for it. “The more difficult the pathology is and the more organs it covers, not only do we have to have access to all kinds of techniques, but we also have to have at our disposal the most tools. For example, a group that is developing a lot is that of ultrasound. When assessing the patient on our hospital ward or even on call, it is one more instrument and a way to broaden our examination beyond the stethodontic device and our hands”, details the specialist.

To train in this or other tools, the internist will have 37 round tables, 5 debates, 14 workshops, 10 update sessions, 15 meetings with the expert and 17 oral communications presentation sessions, among many others, such as the student’s followingnoon and the resident’s followingnoon, exhibition of scientific posters (22), or the opening and closing conferences, the awards ceremony, and a session dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of SEMI (1952-2022), as well as 8 satellite symposiums.

“I hope that the internists are satisfied and feel proud of their specialty, of everything they cover and all that we have left to grow. If we already had a lot to say, with the increase in the survival of the Spanish population even more. Furthermore, in the MIR election we are gaining weight among the best grades. It is clear that among the new consignments of doctors, the pathology we treat and the work we do are gaining more and more value ”, claims the president of the Scientific Committee.
