«The fact that dental doctors are disappearing from the teaching of Oral Medicine constitutes a real challenge to keep this discipline alive». This is stated in this interview by the authors of the book «Contemporary Oral Medicine: Eduardo Chimenos Küstner, tenured professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Barcelona (recently retired) and José López López, tenured professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Barcelona and co-director of the Master of Medicine, Surgery and Oral Implantology in the same center.
It’s been 12 years since the doctors Edward Chimenos Küstner and Jose Lopez Lopez, both full professors of Oral Medicine at the University of Barcelona, published «Oral Medicine Schemes». This first publication has been the basis for his new work “Contemporary Oral Medicine”, which comes with many novelties from the hand of 24 current authors, who participate in different chapters.
To find out what is hidden behind the 45 book themesin which the different diseases that we can find within Oral Medicine are addressed, from Gaceta Dental we have spoken with its two authors-coordinators.
More than a practical guide
“Twelve years following the publication of the book “Esquemas de Medicina Bucal” we coordinated and presented a completely renewed edition -explains Dr. Chimenos Küstner-. The big difference with respect to the previous work is the expansion and updating of the information, as well as the contribution of abundant tables and illustrative photos., which complete the written text. Our aim – confirms Dr. Chimenos Küstner – is provide the reader with eminently clinical information of the most relevant medical aspects of the odontostomatological field.
«We intend to provide the dental student and the practicing dentist a practical guide -explains Dr. López López-, with predominantly clinical aspects, which allows him to enter the attractive world of Oral Medicine. It is a more voluminous work, compared to the 2010 book, which At no time does it stop being an eminently practical manuscript that we believe can serve as a clear guide in the management of a large number of frequent oral pathologies and other less frequent ones.».
It is a very useful work, both for dental students and for practicing dentists and stomatologists, as well as for other students or health professionals who wish to expand knowledge in relation to the topics covered and, more specifically, both authors believe that it can also serve as a guide to
primary care physicians.
All the disorders of oral medicine in a single book
Among the 45 topics covered in this publication, we find essential chapters to understand what the functions and dysfunctions of the stomatognathic systemthe physical examination of hard and soft tissuesas well as morphological and biochemical testshighlighting the importance of biopsy, as well as Other basic aspects that the dentist should know.
Dr. Chimenos Küstner stresses the value of «the chapters dealing with the medical aspects that should govern when collecting patient information (clinical history, physical examination and complementary studies), as well as all those that deal with the pathology of the mucosa and salivary glands.
Perhaps because they belong to different areas of Medicine, they are relegated to the background in some teaching fields. Also essential are chapters that
They deal with precancerous lesions and oral cancersince the dentist can be the first to detect them ».
Dr. López López does not forget the contents in which “it is done a review of mucocutaneous diseases, temporomandibular joint and pain pathologyso frequent in the dental office».
This extensive publication also addresses systemic diseases such as blood diseases hemostasis disturbances and coagulation disorders, as well as endocrine and metabolic diseasesconnective tissue diseases, rheumatic diseases and AIDS.
The analysis of all this pathology results essential for the dentist in his daily practice.
Finally, very varied and interesting topics are presented, such as the relationship between pharmacotherapy and oral pathologywaves most prevalent alterations in the elderly and in children. To conclude, the authors address aspects related to Legal and Forensic Odontologyas well as a topic of growing importance in the field of Medicine: dysbiosis.
In summary, «Contemporary Oral Medicine» is a very useful publication for all professionals who seek to increase and update their knowledge of
Oral Medicine.
24 authors from different specialties
Another thing that makes this book so useful is that “It is written entirely by professionals directly involved in teaching and clinical care.resorting to colleagues from other medical specialties in those more specific topics”, explains Dr. López López.
In total they appear 24 specialist authors in different medical disciplines who offer us their knowledge and experiences.
In addition, as explained by Dr. Chimenos Küstner «the expository clarity, together with the large number of images, make the text a very complete source of up-to-date knowledge, which approximate it to the function of a clinical atlas». This iconography and detail of the various diseases is very broad and precise, which makes it really easy to read and understand.
Oral medicine, a specialty at risk of extinction
Since the lesions that manifest in the oral cavity can be of local origin or due to other diseases that affect the organism, It is essential that the dentist have medical knowledge to help establish an accurate diagnosis and propose the appropriate treatmentor the most pertinent referral of the patient to the most suitable specialist, if applicable.
Due to the consecutive changes in the study plans, this specialty might be at risk of disappearing: «Given the split between Dentistry and Medicine, when Dentistry disappeared from the curricula, I consider it essential that specialties like this exist, which support their content in medical aspects, scarcely treated in other disciplines taught in dental studies”, explains Dr. Chimenos Küstner, who predicts that “the fact that doctors are disappearing from the teaching of Oral Medicine and Clinical care for dental patients, as we retire, is a real challenge to keep this discipline alive. For it it is necessary to maintain the stimulus and interest in the subject among the young generations of dentistswhose role in detection, diagnosis and treatment will continue to be fundamental and irreplaceable.
