what to know about Omicron’s BA.2 sub-variant

Several European countries on the alert

A new wave of COVID-19 does indeed seem to be emerging in several European countries at the moment, directly linked to the transmission of BA.2 which is now dominant in France and Denmark among others. These countries are indeed seeing a very strong increase in cases of COVID-19, in a context where at the same time we are witnessing a general relaxation of measures.

In France, there is already talk of a “beginning of 6e wave”, while cases in mid-March had increased by 57% compared to the previous week. Health authorities, on the other hand, said they were confident that this wave would not have an impact on hospitals.

Is the BA.2 in Canada?

The BA.2 sub-variant is indeed present here. It was identified this winter, both in Quebec and in other provinces. But even if we are currently in a trough, it is still the Omicron variant that dominates in Quebec. Except that if the two years of the pandemic have taught us anything, it’s that we should never take anything for granted, since the situation can change extremely quickly!

Ontario, our neighboring province, reported in mid-March that now around 50% of COVID cases are related to BA.2. This sub-variant is therefore destined to become dominant here too. To be continued!
