When a warning light comes on on the dashboard, it is to inform the driver of a problem with the vehicle. But what should be done if the light in question concerns the coolant?

During the lessons of the Highway Code and the driving license, learner drivers must assimilate a lot of information. These concern both traffic rules like traffic lightsthe reflexes to adopt, the principle of eco-driving as well as the operation of the vehicle. And to warn the driver that a part has a technical problem, there are several indicator lights present at the counters. These can be of different colors (blue, green, orange, red) and indicate to the driver an anomaly or a danger. Among the list of lights that are usually red, we find the one linked to the cooling liquid. The fact that the light is red may cause the driver to stop driving immediately. And that is the case with this light.

Why does the coolant light come on?

The coolant warning light is symbolized by a small thermometer-like temperature gauge above small waves. When it comes on, it means the vehicle is overheating. More specifically, it indicates that the coolant is too hot and can no longer cool certain sensitive parts. Fact, the heat can impact and damage certain elements essential to the proper functioning of the vehicle, such as the engine block. A similar light, but amber, can also mean that the coolant level is too low. In any case, driving for too long with this warning light on represents a danger for the driver and his passengers. It must therefore react quickly if the latter lights up.

Driving still possible, but over a very short distance

Ideally, you should stop immediately. Since this is a red light, stopping on the side of the road or on the hard shoulder is authorized. If your home is nearby, you can bring your car home. But be careful, because the longer the light is on, the higher the risk of failure. Also, the red light may signal that the head gasket or a sensor is broken. You will then have to take the car to a garage to fix the problem and avoid further overheating.. Depending on the damaged parts and the nature of the breakdown, repairs will then cost between 60 et 1 200 €.

How to remove coolant?

Some situations are warning signs or signs of failure. Indeed, a car is not a machine to be taken lightly. When you detect the slightest anomaly, you must contact your mechanic or garage. If the coolant light is on, it’s not a good sign. The first less serious anomaly is the low level of the coolant in its reservoir pot. The second more serious anomaly is that the coolant container is punctured. You must therefore find a solution and not struggle to hit the road. When it is the first abnormality, please take the dedicated liquid and fill the pot to the allowed limit, often marked (Max). Only then can you remove the coolant light naturally. If the anomaly concerns the second breakdown, it is advisable to completely change the pot.
