It’s unlikely, but not impossible. How to behave properly when encountering a brown bear.
They are actually shy and wary of humans. If bears and humans meet, things can get critical. In May, hikers spotted a bear in Pinzgau. Trentino has seen that this can be dangerous. A jogger was fatally injured there in early April.
The most important rules of conduct in the kingdom of bears
- In bear territory, it’s important to make yourself known. People shouldn’t walk quietly, but talk and sing loudly.
- In some countries it is customary to wear bells. In this way, the bear can perceive people from a distance and retreat.
- Dense bushes should be avoided so as not to surprise the bear.
- Another tip is not to leave litter or leftover food behind. Because that attracts the bears.
What should I do if I see a bear?
- Do not run away. If you meet a bear, stop and keep your distance.
- Do not feed or photograph the animal and slowly move backwards.
- Don’t try to scare him away or throw stones or branches at him.
What should I do if a bear attacks me?
- If a bear approaches you, stay calm.
- If he straightens up, this is not necessarily to be understood as a threat. This gives bears a better overview.
- In the event of an attack, you should slowly lie down on the ground, put your hands behind your neck and play dead. This is how the bear knows that you are not a threat.
- Stay in this position until the bear retreats and is far enough away.
Why do bears attack?
Bear attacks on humans are rare, but the effects are often severe due to the size and strength of the animals. There are two main reasons for bear attacks: mothers want to protect their cubs, and bears are attracted by food or garbage and come close to humans. Dangerous situations can also arise when a bear is injured or when dogs are roaming freely.
How likely is it to meet a bear in Austria?
In Austria, the bear population has been considered extinct since 2011. But there are so-called cross-border commuters: bears who immigrate across the Italian or Slovenian border. In 2022, four cross-border bears were reported in Austria.
