What to do if you can’t use the ECG app on your Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 4 brought several new features when it was released in 2018. In addition to an improved design and a larger screen, it also came with a very interesting feature for those who care about their health.

It is the possibility of making a electrocardiogram (ECG) using a proprietary app. To do this, just open it and keep your finger on the Digital Crown for 30 seconds until the result appears on the screen and a PDF document is created (ideal for you to send to your doctor, for example).

However, if you are facing any problem related to this feature, we have separated in this article some tips that can help you.

Let’s go?! ❤️

  • Check if your Apple Watch is compatible. It works on Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, Series 7, Series 8 and Ultra models. Both generations of the Apple Watch SE are left out.
  • The ECG app is only available to users aged 22 and over.
  • For the feature to work properly, liquid-free skin contact is required. So dry your hands and Apple Watch thoroughly before recording.
  • If you are using an Apple Watch via Family Setup (not available in Brazil and Portugal), the ECG app will not be available.
  • Force close the ECG app and manually open it again. To do so, press the side button (below the Digital Crown) for a few seconds until the power off screen and emergency options appear. Release it and then keep the Digital Crown pressed for a few seconds.
  • According to Apple, a small percentage of users may have certain physiological conditions that prevent sufficient signal generation to produce a satisfactory ECG recording. Check this by placing your Apple Watch on someone else’s arm and asking them to try to register.
  • Delete the ECG app and install it again. To do this, press the Digital Crown to open the apps view. If you’re using wide view, press and hold your finger on top of the screen and go to “Edit Apps” so that they all start to shake. Then tap the “X” and confirm. If you use the grid view style, do the same procedure above or simply swipe your finger from right to left over the app, tap the trash can icon and confirm. After that, open the App Store, search for ECG and download it.
  • Try restarting your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Make sure both your iPhone and Apple Watch are properly updated to the latest versions of iOS and watchOS.
  • Unpair your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone and set it up again. Don’t worry, when you unpair the watch from the iPhone, a backup of the watch will be created on your phone.

What if nothing works?

If you are still having difficulties using the ECG app, it could be that your device has a damaged component or something like that. To have your watch inspected and your issue resolved, contact Apple Support.

This can be done by calling 0800-761-0880, through the website or through the Support app.
