The obligations are numerous : be registered with the Crossroads Bank for Companies to obtain a company number, be registered for VAT, be a client of a social secretariat to possibly pay social security contributions, and have a ambulant card. And for street sales in the markets, you need an additional special card. To sell food, you also need authorization from Afsca, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain.
It has become simpler than it seems since the creation of business counters in 2003. There are eight in Belgium, the best known of which are Securex, Partena, UCM and Xerius and in which advisors specialized in business creation take care of the procedures. The service is free, but you have to pay 101 euros for registration with the Crossroads Bank and 150 euros for the ambulant card. Social security contributions are reduced for additional self-employed people, and no VAT for turnover below 25,000 euros.
