Most people seem to bemoan the lack of facilities in Pakistan, but there are some who make their own way. Film director and animator Usman Riaz is also one of them.
Osman set out on a journey 10 years ago to create an entire animated film by animating hand-drawn pictures. Such in Pakistan the film Nothing existed at the time to make, neither the studio nor the people to work on it.
During this period, he cut several mountains and dug several rivers and thus produced Pakistan’s first hand-made animated feature film ‘Shishegar’ or ‘The Glass Worker’.
Independent Urdu met Usman Riaz and spoke to him exclusively about this effort.
Why was drawing by hand important? On this question, Usman said that he was fond of drawing as a child and had painted many walls. At the same time, he said that I am very fond of hand-drawn animation, so I did not think about what we are doing in the age of computers and artificial intelligence, I just had to do it and did it.
Making a film in Pakistan is a difficult task and an animated film is even more difficult. Although earlier Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s ‘Tein Bahadur Series’ and ‘Donkey King’ received good response, there was no framework for converting hand-drawn images into animation, so Usman developed it first, 2014. Produced people from 2019 to 2019 and produced this film from 2019 to 2023.
Usman Riaz said that the film was made far away from Pakistan, but many elements of Pakistan will be seen in it (Hasan Kazmi/Independent Urdu).
He said that ‘an animation film has 12 frames in a second and this number can be less or more, but in this process approximately 200,000 images were produced.’
Usman said that ‘Animation is a tool, with which we tell the story by cutting it. This story was written 10 years ago, the conditions that existed then are probably still the same today.
The theme of the film is anti-war, where patriotism prevails over love.

According to Usman: ‘It is a full fantasy world story, it also has a neo-demographic style. Buildings of Pakistan and especially Karachi like Friar Hall or Empress Market and then there is also the Islamic style of architecture. By combining these two things in this film, the world has been named ‘Waterfront Town’.
“Karachi has colonial and Islamic architecture, we tried to show both these styles in the film and then the clothes the characters wear and the food they eat are indigenous but also try to bring a universality to it. of The style we have adapted in this film, everything has been made in the same style.’
He said that if we were to show Pakistan in the film, it wouldn’t give objectivity, so it was made a little out of Pakistan, but a lot of things from Pakistan will be seen in it.
In the end, Usman Riaz said that he and his team of animation studios have made a film with heart, so he is thankful to God. ‘I thank Allah every day that we got the opportunity to make such a film. I just do my job and want people to see this film and hope they go to the cinema to see it.’
The film is available in both English and Urdu languages and is being developed in other languages as well, while Usman says that if the deal is done, they will definitely produce it in Arabic as well.
