The universe holds many mysteries for us that our species has yet to solve, and year following year, with advances in technology and information, these objectives are getting closer and closer.

The vast and enigmatic universe hides many questions to which we still do not have answers, however, the advances that science has made to this day are not in vain, since we have already left our planet, reached the Moon, Mars, and robotically, much further with probes that have entered planets or asteroids that no human might enter, according to information from National Geographic.

However, among so many mysteries to discover in the universe, people tend to forget general and basic questions, such is the example of a question that has had a lot of buzz recently, “what does space smell like?” .

What is the aroma of the universe? Have you ever asked yourself that? Well, many astrologers and biochemists do, and although the results of their surveys have been very varied and even without certain foundations, the conclusions will surprise you in the same way, because the testimonies of the closest thing to this question come from people who have already visited the space previously.

Of course, it must be clarified that no person is capable of smelling space without dying in the attempt, however, the closest thing we have to this is the aroma that those who have been in space in a ship or on the Space Station have perceived. International.

Science has been in charge of collecting the testimonies of astronauts who have had the opportunity to be included in missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administrationalso known by its acronym in English as NASA, who have been able to breathe the air of the International Space Station.

Although there are various theories as to why the air there smells different, it is still not known for sure, it is said that it is a chemical reaction of the Sun’s rays and the oxygen that the space station stores, and another theory says that in reality it does. It is a characteristic aroma of space due to all the chemical reactions that occur in it.

Astronaut Dominic Antonelli tells us that the aroma he smelled was indescribable like something he had never smelled before.

Astronaut Don R. Pettit describes space as having a peculiar smell, something between metallic and with sweet notes, in his words, it smells like the residue of smoke and steam left by welding.

On the other hand, astronaut Kevin Ford also believes that the aroma of the universe cannot be described for the simple fact that on Earth he has never perceived a smell equal to that, something totally unique and indescribable.

All these astronauts, all these participants in space missions organized by NASA, have their own perception and opinion regarding what space smells like, however, the truth is that this is very uncertain, since no one has the ability to smell the universe and live to tell the tale, but the testimonies and studies carried out show that the universe can have an aroma of hot metal, burnt meat, coal, oil and metal welding.

A curious fact on this topic of the aroma of space, a biochemist, Steve Pearce, was working hand in hand with NASA, his studies and his information, to create a fragrance for common use called “Space Water”, usually found in shaving products and perfumes. This fragrance, in addition to being freely available to the public, is used to accustom future astronauts to the aroma of space.
