Which plants cannot survive on a balcony?

As you can imagine, there are different species of resistant plants that acclimatize perfectly well on the balcony, while others risk dying prematurely if they are grown there. There is no mystery there: direct contact with the sun’s rays can cause irreparable drying out of plants, without even giving you time to intervene.

Camellia

In other words, if your balcony faces south, excessive light can do a lot of damage, especially to fragile plants like camellias. If you have any knowledge of gardening, you probably know that it is essential to choose a suitable location and an appropriate position for the plants. A golden rule? Sunlight should definitely not be directed directly onto the foliage. Instead, you should favor a shaded and ventilated area.

And aside from the sun, even a particularly windy environment can harm delicate plants! Be careful of drafts: if they are powerful and frequent, there will inevitably be repercussions on the health of your plants. As you will have understood, installing plants on the balcony is not an easy task, since there are many parameters to take into account.

Orchid

If we take orchids, for example. These magnificent flowers need light but not direct exposure to the sun. These plants are therefore not suitable for outdoor life. It is best to install them near a window, while protecting them with curtains or shutters.

winter cactus

Among the plants that you should avoid placing on the balcony, we also find the winter cactus. This species likes cool temperatures (around 10°C) and cannot tolerate the impact of the sun’s rays. On the other hand, indoors, do not consider installing it near a heat source such as a fireplace or a radiator, it might also be harmful to it.

Imposing plants

In addition to plants that are too fragile and delicate, also forget regarding species that are too imposing! First of all, the idea is not to clutter your balcony. It must remain airy and refined so as not to spoil the aesthetics of the setting. It is therefore important to correctly assess its size before purchasing your plants, if only to avoid complicated circulation on your balcony. If some are too big, they won’t fit there. For growing in pots, don’t consider large roots, they won’t fit into your small pots!

Climbers

Likewise, pay attention to climbing plants: certainly, they are particularly ornamental, but they risk annoying your neighbors if they fall on their windows or their own balconies.

Plants with thorns

Finally, it goes without saying, it would be wiser to avoid all plants with thorns: it’s no fun getting pricked every time you go out on the balcony!
