What now, Apple? Developer criticizes and suggests boycott of the Feedback Assistant application

Feedback Assistant is a tool that allows application developers for Apple products — such as the iPhone and Mac — to contact the manufacturer’s experts to report bugs, but it seems that the community is not satisfied with the platform due to a series of problems.

Jeff Johnson, application developer for iOS and macOS, made a post on his blog on Monday (06) announcing that he is organizing a boycott of Feedback Assistant. According to him, the company’s team often leaves developers “talking to themselves” and does not contribute to problem solving.

The expert listed several reasons why the feedback platform is a big problem for developers. Bug reports often go unanswered for months, discussions are closed without any resolution, and in some cases Apple demands invasive system diagnostic reports — often for no reason.

Johnson suggests a boycott so that the platform remains in disuse until action is taken by Apple. It is recommended that developers send one last feedback through the application, citing the reasons why they are dissatisfied with the platform, warning regarding the boycott and stopping contacting the company.

The boycott is not a complaint directed at Apple employees, according to the developer. People linked to the company have already expressed that it would be very difficult to improve the feedback system due to the high number of bug reports, however, Johnson believes that the manufacturer might very well hire more staff, if this is the problem.

Feedback Assistant is an app built into iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and other operating systems when developers are participating in a beta version. The application automatically installs itself when switching from a public build to a testing version and cannot be removed until the user reverts the change.

In July, a group of more than a thousand app developers filed a lawsuit once morest Apple in the United Kingdom. The reason is the community’s dissatisfaction regarding the App Store’s abusive commission charges — up to 30% of the value of in-app purchases — which gained negative attention especially following the Epic Games lawsuit.

Developers accuse the company of monopolizing the App Store — which is the only legitimate way to download and install applications on iOS — and charging abusive fees in the process of selling applications and paid features, such as subscribing to a service.
