Driving an electric scooter requires a specific license like its thermal counterpart. Available in 50 and 125cc equivalent, this article takes stock of this subject.

What license do you need to travel on an electric scooter without running the risk of being chased by the police? This is also the question that everyone asks themselves before buying their electric two-wheeler. For this reason, we have dedicated this article to inform you regarding the different permits required depending on the category of electric scooter.

Different categories of electric scooters for different driving licenses

Unlike thermal scooters, to evaluate the power of an electric model, we do not refer to its cylinder capacity. So, the cm3 mention would not be of much use. On the contrary, the legislation takes into account its engine couplenoted and kW. This torque determines the maximum speed of the vehicle and therefore the type of risk it presents.

In this case, it is necessary to distinguish the 3 main categories of electric scooters to evaluate their power:

An electric two-wheeler with one power less than 4 kW equals a 50 cm3 scooter;

An electric scooter with engine power less than 11 kW equals a 125 cm3 scooter;

The two electric wheels with a power included between 11 kW and 35 kW are called maxi-scooters.

The license used must therefore correspond to the power of the electric scooter.

License for a 50cc electric scooter

Note that the maximum speed of a 50cc two equivalent is 45km/h. To drive it, you must have an AM license. The latter also replaces the BSR.

Even 14 year olds can obtain this permit. They must also follow an 8-hour training course, generally divided into 2 half-days. To obtain it, you don’t need to pass the highway code.

Driving license of 125cc equivalent

To ride a 125cc electric scooter, you must first be major. In addition, you must be holder of an A1 driving license.

Be careful however, it is no longer enough to have a B license to be able to drive a 125cc equivalent. People born following March 1, 1980 are obliged to follow a special training lasting 7 hourss priced at 300 to 400 € per year.

Two large-displacement electric wheels

Do you want to combine the characteristics of an urban scooter and the performance of a more powerful two-wheeler? In this case, the electric maxi-scooter will meet your expectations. This type of bike has a maximum power of 35 kW. To drive it, you must be 18 years old and hold a permis moto A2.

Rules to follow when traveling on an electric scooter

In addition to holding an appropriate license, there are points to consider before riding an electric scooter. Indeed, whatever your license (A2, A1 or AM), the driver of the two-wheeler is more exposed to danger than a motorist. The latter must therefore respect a series of obligations, in particular in terms of equipment:

Headphones in accordance with the provisions in force. For this purpose, you should prefer a modular or full face helmet to a jet for greater safety.

Have gloves that comply with CE standards. However, Decree No. 2016-1232 reinforced this requirement by adding the wearing of a helmet when driving an electric scooter, regardless of the power of the machine.

As a reminder, non-compliance with this system is punishable by a fine of 68 euros. In addition, the driving license is reduced by one point.

In addition to these security measures, the law imposes two other obligations:

Registration : all electric scooters must be registered, even those who don’t have a license.

Assurance : all two-wheelers must be covered by insurance. This covers at least civil liability, that is to say damage in the event of an accident for which the driver is responsible. It should be noted that electric scooter insurance costs less than that of the thermal model.

Although electric scooters are subject to a number of rules, opting for this mode of transport has many advantages. Here are a few.

Electric scooters: what are their advantages?

Respect the environment

Electric scooters do not rely on non-renewable energy sources like oil, natural gas, coal or nuclear power. Ride an electric scooter reduces carbon footprint et improves the environmentt, because it does not emit harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. By opting for an electric scooter, you can help the environment by reducing noise and pollution levels and promoting a healthier, more sustainable future.

Profitability

Compared to traditional gas-powered scooters, electric scooters have considerable cost advantages.

They use batteries lithium-ion. This helps reduce fuel consumption, the price of which is increasing these days. These batteries are durable and can last from 2 to 4 years. Battery life can be even longer if properly maintained.

The cost of electricity to charge an electric scooter is significantly lower to the fuel cost of a gasoline scooter. Additionally, electric scooters require less maintenance, because they have fewer moving parts than traditional scooters.

Convenience

Electric scooters constitute a convenient mode of transportation, especially for short city trips. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver in traffic, making them a great choice for city dwellers. Additionally, many electric scooters come with features like smartphone connectivity and built-in GPS systems for added convenience.

Additionally, electric scooters do not have a vibrating motor, which reduces stress on your body. The result is a calmer and more pleasant ride.
