Driving an electric scooter requires a specific license like its thermal counterpart. Available in 50 and 125cc equivalent, this article takes stock of this subject.

License for a 50cc electric scooter
Note that the maximum speed of a 50cc two equivalent is 45km/h. To drive it, you must have an AM license. The latter also replaces the BSR.
Even 14 year olds can obtain this permit. They must also follow an 8-hour training course, generally divided into 2 half-days. To obtain it, you don’t need to pass the highway code.
Driving license of 125cc equivalent
To ride a 125cc electric scooter, you must first be major. In addition, you must be holder of an A1 driving license.
Be careful however, it is no longer enough to have a B license to be able to drive a 125cc equivalent. People born following March 1, 1980 are obliged to follow a special training lasting 7 hourss priced at 300 to 400 € per year.
Two large-displacement electric wheels
Do you want to combine the characteristics of an urban scooter and the performance of a more powerful two-wheeler? In this case, the electric maxi-scooter will meet your expectations. This type of bike has a maximum power of 35 kW. To drive it, you must be 18 years old and hold a permis moto A2.
Rules to follow when traveling on an electric scooter
In addition to holding an appropriate license, there are points to consider before riding an electric scooter. Indeed, whatever your license (A2, A1 or AM), the driver of the two-wheeler is more exposed to danger than a motorist. The latter must therefore respect a series of obligations, in particular in terms of equipment:
Headphones in accordance with the provisions in force. For this purpose, you should prefer a modular or full face helmet to a jet for greater safety.
Have gloves that comply with CE standards. However, Decree No. 2016-1232 reinforced this requirement by adding the wearing of a helmet when driving an electric scooter, regardless of the power of the machine.
