In large hotels, it is customary to renew certain products daily, especially those in the bathroom. And, let’s face it, the majority of customers are particularly fond of these little bottles of shampoo, shower gel and other body care products. They don’t hesitate to put some in their luggage to take them home. Let’s be clear, although you don’t have the soul of a thief, when you enter your pretty hotel room, it’s hard to resist this panoply of small “luxurious” objects that make you the eye. Some may call it “stealing,” but in truth, there’s nothing wrong with bringing home a few bottles of toiletries. Knowing that your bill more than covers the cost of these items!

The hotels take advantage of this to offer them generously to you, just to keep a good memory of your stay and to do some publicity at the same time. But be careful, don’t think that everything in the room automatically belongs to you! While some items are within your reach, other items are hotel property and it would be harmful to steal them. Nevertheless, many travelers allow themselves certain deviations. As proof: according to a study carried out by the Wellness Heaven platform, with a few luxury establishments, many tourists do not hesitate to take “not free” objects with them such as the remote control, crockery (glasses, cups , cutlery), sheets and pillowcases, paintings, iron, hair dryer, coffee maker, telephone or even bedside lamps. Just that !

What can you take in the suitcase?

With a bit of common sense and a minimum of etiquette, it is still not rocket science to know the difference between what can be taken away and what should not be touched! Now that you have an idea of what to avoid “stinging” in your hotel room, let’s see what you can put in your suitcase without feeling guilty.

Can’t do without it at the end of your stay? Rest assured, the hotel offers you these slippers that you like so much! Since no one will use them following you, there’s no problem keeping them.

When it is perfectly clean, nicely decorated and well equipped, the bathroom remains one of the favorite rooms of travellers. As a bonus, some establishments take care to garnish it as desired! General observation: we are all attracted by these chic little sachets and bottles. We hasten to open them one following the other to discover the content. The good news is that it is perfectly permitted to take all of these products. Enough to stock up on shampoos, shower gels, moisturizers, oils and other treatments. Obviously, as these are perishable products, you can enjoy them happily. In some palaces, the luckiest can even benefit from a free bottle of champagne and more sophisticated snacks. Don’t we say that the customer is king? On the other hand, it should be remembered that everything in the minibar, mainly alcohol, is subject to payment.

It is not uncommon to find notepads, pens and pencils with the hotel logo. Don’t worry, they are renewed for each client, so you can keep them with you. After all, it is even an additional promotion for the establishment! Some guests will occasionally be lucky enough to find free maps and travel guides in their room. Even better, some luxury hotels even offer free tickets or passes, for example to visit a museum or enjoy a local tourist attraction. Regal, right?

This is the question that burns everyone’s lips…and even annoys sometimes! Because no, even if some don’t hesitate to slip these items into their suitcase, it is not allowed to take towels and bathrobes. We agree, these pieces are very pleasant to the touch and generally of good quality, but even if it is tempting to secretly pack at least one piece in the suitcase, it is better to hold back. Imagine the picture: if all the customers get involved, it would be a real loss of income for the establishment! Tell yourself that the bath towels, bathrobes and moreover the entire bedding, are the property of the hotel. And for good reason, they are cleaned, disinfected and reused by other customers. The establishment is not supposed to systematically buy back all these items. Better to be warned: if one of these elements is missing, once at check-out, you will probably be asked to pay for it!

Can we take a person back to their hotel room?

In absolute terms, most hotels give guests permission to bring visitors back to their rooms. However, this policy may vary by institution. Thus, some require you to inform the reception, while others limit the duration of the visit or establish specific times. You can also come across a hotel that strictly forbids access to non-residents, at least in the rooms.
