The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has reminded that animals can transmit diseases to humans, since they are not vaccinated. Among these, zoonosis stands out, a series of bacterial diseases.
Although one of the main factors for transmitting zoonosis is having exotic animals as pets, that is, primates, lizards or marsupials, anyone could acquire this series of diseases even through poor food preparation.
The two main forms of contagion of zoonosis are: the ingestion of contaminated food and direct contagion through the saliva or bite of infected animals.
What is zoonosis?
According to IMSSZoonosis is an infection that passes from an animal to a human and causes diseases such as:
- Rabia
- Brucellosis
- Rickettsiosis
- Brain inflammation
- Salmonellosis
- Influenza
- Taeniasis-cysticercosis complex
All of them must be addressed immediately to follow up, as they can escalate into pandemics such as SARS-CoV 2, which mutated rapidly and was generated by zoonosis, so no country had the experience on how to handle it.
How does having exotic pets influence the spread of zoonosis?
The IMSS points out that the zoonosis can be transmitted by the saliva of any infected animal. However, exotic animals that have become pets, such as marsupials, primates or lizards, are not considered domestic and are potential transmitters of diseases.
