Some people feel colder than others but have ever wondered why this happens? It turns out that a specific gland in the body is responsible for this effect.

The thyroid gland located in front of the neck secretes hormones that regulate metabolism, but according to experts, may also affect an individual’s ability to tolerate cold.

How does the thyroid gland affect an individual’s ability to feel cold?

Thyroid gland disorders are divided into two types: hyperactivity and underactivity. The latter occurs when it produces too few hormones, which affects the overall functioning of the body.

In the early stages, a person may not notice any symptoms. However, without treatment, its deficiency in the long term leads to serious conditions such as heart disease and infertility.

Aside from symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, muscle and joint pain, and depression, patients with hypothyroidism can also be extremely sensitive to cold or low temperatures.

In this condition, metabolism slows down, skin vasoconstriction occurs, body temperature drops, and people may feel very cold even in relatively warmer environments.

For diagnosis, it is advised to check for cold hands and feet, but these may also indicate other conditions such as poor circulation or anemia.

Hypothyroidism is known to slow down the metabolism leading to a lower core body temperature, which is why people with extremely low levels of the hormone have a reduced tolerance to cold.
