What is the new road nomenclature implemented by the CIV? – 2024-07-07 17:24:16

Know How many kilometers of roads are there in Guatemala?is the work of the new nomenclature carried out by the infrastructure governing authorities and it is expected to know an inventory of land routes.

“We are working on a new nomenclature at the national level, because the registered road network is 18 thousand kilometers, but we know, according to data we have reviewed, that the actual road network in the country can be up to 40 thousand kilometers,” said Max Alejandro García Rodríguez, Vice Minister of Communications, who is in charge of the infrastructure area.

Therefore, in the future, a new official road map in Guatemala is expected to be released, as presented by the authorities.

Control process

He clarified that in the official databases of the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (Micivi) there is no official data indicating the 40 thousand kilometers, in order to be able to give it attention in the records.

The idea is to know and update which are the national routes, the departmental routes, and which are the primary, secondary and tertiary sections, since, according to the official, there are no coincidences in terms of the records held by the General Directorate of Roads (DGC) and the Road Conservation Unit (Covial) regarding maintenance tasks “and it is clearly not defined who is responsible for the routes.”

It is also intended to display the municipal routes, since although they are not the responsibility of Micivi, it is the governing authority, but, to date, it is unknown which are the municipal routes, but, above all, to know whether or not they comply with the technical criteria for the preparation.

He cited as an example that it is often reported that bridges collapse or are destroyed by river flooding, but in the end, it turns out that they are municipal works, which do not have the technical guidelines required by Micivi, so they cannot intervene, but there is demand from economic agents, as it is the governing body for roads.

“Without this information, which has not been consolidated to date, it is very difficult to provide a response to the population, of what appears to be efficiency, but what there really is, is a lack of coordination and communication, which is what is being worked on,” responded the vice minister, in response to the various problems recorded due to the rains at the beginning of winter.

In the future, the official stressed that it is expected to rely on a program to digitize the routes, in order to have them “well mapped” to know where they are established, their maintenance status, their current condition, and their useful life, which is why progress is being made in the inventory of the roads, and to consolidate the information to address emergencies and the demands of the population.
