In the last hours, 25 cases of a new coronavirus mutation that combines symptoms and characteristics of the omicron and delta variants were confirmed in Cyprus. The announcement was made by Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology.

The last known coronavirus mutation was named “deltacron” and includes the identification of genetic traces of the omicron variant with delta genomes.

“We have found a significant number of mutations that had only been identified in cases of omicron, which is different from other variants because 30 mutations have been registered. Ten of them were found in samples made in Cyprus ”, explained the virologist, who also clarified that deltacron might be overshadowed by omicron variant due to the high contagion rate of the variant that has already spread around the world.

Hugo Pizzi, Argentine infectologist, detailed how this new mutation might impact in our country: “There are 25 cases, we do not know the sequencing. I am waiting for a report to be sent to me by the ambassador in Cyprus. It is not something worrisome, the concern today is Delta and Ómicron separately that are circulating as a community in Argentina, and especially the Delta that is overwhelming all of Europe ”.

In addition, Hugo Pizzi referred to the vaccination plan that is being developed in Argentina and considered the possibility of a new reinforcement to alleviate the outbreak:“I am convinced that we will go towards a fourth dose” the infectologist pointed out.
