The Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) is a decentralized body of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the scope of the Office of the Chancellor.

“Promote strategies, integrate programs, collect proposals and recommendations from communities, their members, organizations and advisory bodies, aimed at raising the standard of living of Mexican communities abroad.”

The IME seeks to design a long-term agenda and programs to benefit Mexican communities abroad.

What does the IME do?

The Institute for Mexicans Abroad will have the following powers, indicated in the Official Journal of the Federation:

  • Promote the revaluation of the migration phenomenon and the dignified treatment of Mexicans living abroad.
  • Promote the creation of meeting spaces and communication with and between Mexican communities living abroad.
  • Act as a liaison, in coordination with Mexican representations, with Mexican communities living abroad.
  • Establish appropriate coordination with state and municipal governments, institutions and organizations in matters of prevention, care and support for Mexican communities abroad and other related and complementary issues.
  • Design and promote mechanisms for the execution of programs and projects specific to the work of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.
  • Organize and participate in seminars, conferences, symposia, colloquia and public, private and academic congresses on migration and assistance to Mexicans abroad.
  • To collect and systematize proposals and recommendations aimed at improving the social development of Mexican communities abroad, formulated by advisory bodies made up of representatives of said communities.

Regarding the work of the incumbent, he will be assisted in his duties by a Executive Directorwho will have the powers determined by the Internal Regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The body is dependent on the Ministry of Foreign Affairswhich will be headed Juan Ramon de la Fuente.
