What is the fate of “Capital Control”? – MTV Lebanon

Hala Al-Husseini wrote in Akhbar Al-Youm:

The parliamentary committees, in their session today, did not reach a clear formula that paves the way for the approval of the Capital Control project, which is still moving slowly, especially since there are those who believe that there is no serious intention until now to approve it, knowing that the atmosphere was indicating the opposite of that last week.

However, parliamentary sources clarified, through the “Akhbar Al-Youm” agency, that the demand for approving the economic recovery plan and restructuring the banks is what slows down the movement of its approval, in addition to that the representatives consider that there is a legalization of the “dollar” once morest the official dollar exchange rate, which is rejected by them.

The most prominent thing that happened in these sessions was the re-raising of the issue of writing off deposits in the economic recovery plan or writing off 60 billion pounds from it, which put the Capital Control project in front of a difficult test, especially since the project talks regarding the committee that decides the issue of withdrawals and their ceiling, which caused a difference in views between Representatives, and therefore a number of articles were suspended, including those related to an exchange platform and some other definitions contained in the draft.

The sources confirm that the deputies stressed the rights of depositors and the recovery of their money, but what was stated by the deputy prime minister, Saada al-Shami, regarding writing off the deposits raised many question marks, which prompted a number of deputies to demand the necessity of recovering the project from the government and not throwing it at the parliament, especially following the start of slander. Responsibilities between the government and the parliament.

From this point of view, it seems that there is a stumbling block in the approval of this project, which has become linked – according to the same parliamentary sources – to the election of a president of the republic and the establishment of a comprehensive settlement in Lebanon to start the economic and financial advancement, provided that the new government develops an integrated plan that among its items is the restructuring of banks and capital control .
